Inside My Life

Meet My Furry Companions: Getting to Know My Pets

If you want to get to know me, you have to get to know some of the most important parts of me, aka my pets. Growing up, I’ve always had a pet, mainly cats. My whole family are animal people, so I’ve encountered different animals my entire life. When it came time for me to have my own place, I would have many of my own. Now, I have had dogs and cats who have made me into an obsessive pet owner. Now, I want to introduce you to the crazy animals I spend most of my time with.

I sometimes call him my first child since he was the first pet I had once I left home. I adopted Hermes from a shelter in Georgia that held events at PetSmart. I spotted him on Facebook and started the process of adopting him over the computer since I was visiting family in New York at the time. During my time in New York, I luckily had a foster watch him until I returned to Georgia.

It was one of the best decisions I made in my life. He is the sweetest and dopiest dog ever. Surprisingly, he doesn’t bark unless extremely startled, but he is usually a quiet boy. As a Bassett Lab mix, you would expect him to be loud, but he is just a teddy bear who loves belly rubs. He has the most oversized ears that flop when he runs and snores the loudest in the house. Unfortunately, he crossed the rainbow bridge a little while ago, but I keep him close to me every day because the love I have for him will never dim.

I got Artemis not that long after adopting Hermes. A good friend in Georgia got her, but her first dog wasn’t getting along with Artemis. She asked me if I could take the pup, but I couldn’t say no. Flash forward, and she is still the sassy and spoiled dog I fell in love with. She is the total opposite of Hermes. She will bark at everything that comes near the house. She is a Jack Russell and lives up to all they are known for. She is hyper, can jump really high, and let you know what she wants. She is my rebel, and I have a love/hate relationship with her. She doesn’t live with me currently, but she is still one of my pets, and I always check up on her.

My cat, Athena, is my second cat since I had my own place. My first ran away, but he was an outside cat. He just did what his instincts told him to do. Now I have Athena, who happens to also be my birthday twin. I adopted her from PetSmart like I did Hermes. I’ve had a lot of good experiences with them! But the adoption company here at the Las Vegas PetSmart gave me time to connect with Athena before I said yes. She was just a grey fluff with lots of energy. She loves to play with other animals, whether cats or dogs. She is the queen of this jungle. She is very playful and loves the tree she uses to look out the window and sleep.

This little boy cat is the newest of the bunch, like the youngest child. It always felt like it was meant for me to have Kazuma, or as my family likes to call him, Zumi. Before getting Kazuma, I continuously looked for kittens; every time I wanted to pick up the kitten, they would be gone. One weekend, I was frustrated with looking online and went to the humane society here in Las Vegas. I had his photo, but I was sure he wouldn’t still be available. But the stars aligned, and not only was he still available, but it was also a free adoption event, which made it so much easier to spoil him immediately. Getting him and Athena acquainted wasn’t as heavy a lift as I expected, and after a few months of him being part of the family, I realized they were two peas in a pod. He is a ball of fire, and if he isn’t napping, he runs around the house to get his energy out. He is the perfect fit.

I may have the craziest bunch of animals, but I wouldn’t change them for the world. Do you have any pets? Share your pet photos and what you like about them!
