What to Watch This September: Six Movies and Shows on My Radar
With the start of September, we can expect new shows and movies in the theater and across streaming platforms. I have practically all the streaming platforms, from Disney + to Peacock. So, every month, I check the various entertainment websites to get the lowdown on what is coming up. Whether it is brand new shows, movies I missed in the theaters or old movies I haven’t seen in a long time, I make a list of what to watch for the month.
With preparations for spooky season and cooler weather, September is a good month for new releases as people are staying in more. This year, there is a mix of horror, comedy and nerdy options, which makes me super excited for the month. Here are the six movies and shows I have on my list.
Agatha All Along
Wandavision has a pretty divisive review, but I was one of the people who absolutely loved it. Agatha was one of the reasons I liked the show, so I am excited to see her back on the screen. Agatha All Along looks action-packed and full of interesting characters. Also, anything with Aubrey Plaza is a yes for me. Agatha All Along will premiere on Disney + with two episodes on September 18.
The Boy and the Heron
I am a huge Studio Ghibli fan, and when I heard about this movie, I anxiously awaited its release. This beautifully animated movie follows the journey of a young boy trying to find his mother. Aside from the vibrant animation, the cast list will grab your attention. The film stars Willem Dafoe, Mark Hamill, Florence Pugh, Robert Pattinson and many more famed actors. This movie will be available on Max starting September 16.
The Penguin
This limited series is based on the well-known Batman villain who viewers have seen in Batman Returns, The Batman (1966) and (2022) and Gotham (TV series), though he looked very different. The Penguin has a gritty and dramatic vibe to it. From the trailer, the show will have a lot of references to the comics as they have a lot of established characters already named in the preview. The Penguin will star an unrecognizable Colin Farrell and stream on September 19 on Max.
Immaculate
Gearing up for spooky season, I have one horror movie to watch this month. Sydney Sweeney stars in Immaculate, a religious horror film that looks to borrow some inspiration from The Omen. I’ve been a fan of The Omen for a long time and wanted to watch Immaculate in theaters, but I didn’t get a chance. It started streaming on Hulu in August, but in honor of the cooling weather and the knock of Halloween on my door, I think now is a good time.
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba
I am a huge anime fan and sometimes prefer to binge the season, depending on the show. Demon Slayer is one of the anime that I like to watch in one sitting because of the action. The fourth and final season aired around the Hashira arc, and I plan to binge it before the movie ending the story releases. Though not one of my top anime, I recommend it to fans who like action and family-centered series. It definitely has a great story.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice
Releasing in theaters on Friday, September 6, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is the highly anticipated sequel to the 1988 film. Beetlejuice is my number one favorite movie of all time, so I have high hopes for the movie. I am excited to see how Tim Burton continues this campy horror comedy story and what fun it’ll bring. It’s also great to see familiar faces such as Winona Ryder as Lydia Deetz, Catherine O’Hara as Delia Deetz, and of course, Michael Keaton as the leading man, Beetlejuice.
Fun fact: Willem Dafoe made my watchlist twice as he was in The Boy and The Heron and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.
This September is going to be a fun one with these upcoming releases (and a few things I’m a bit late on). Chime in below on what you are watching this month. Are there any films or shows on your list that I mentioned?
